The federal government provides a number of tuition assistance programs for veterans. The GI Bill offers the most benefits, however the assistance you tap into depends on when you left the military. Below is a summary of some of the benefits available. This list is not comprehensive so it is highly recommended that you conduct your own research.
This program is available if you left the military prior to September 11, 2001 and it provides up to 36 months of benefits.
This benefit is for veterans who have an honorable discharge and at least 90 days of service since 9/2011. If you served after 2001, you may qualify for up to 100% of tuition.
DTAP is designed for servicemembers who are separating from the military with a service-connected disability. It includes all the regular TAP content, plus additional material specifically for disabled veterans. DTAP helps disabled veterans: Determine job readiness, address individual special needs, Understand the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program, access vocational rehabilitation services and receive VA disability benefits sooner through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge and Quick Start programs.
JU participates in the Post 9/11 Yellow Ribbon Program. JU will contribute up to 50% of the tuition balance, as matched by, the Veterans Administration. The Yellow Ribbon Program does have exclusions. Students who are active duty, a student of the Division of Aeronautics, or Department of Orthodontics, are not covered by Yellow Ribbon. Complete the VA form 22-1990 on the www.gibill.va.gov website.
The National Nursing Education Initiative (NNEI) is awarded to permanent full and part-time registered nurses who have worked for VA for at least one year to cover tuition costs and related educational expenses for courses in which they are currently enrolled and it provides up to $31,080 to support qualified registered nurses. This great benefit is only available for nursing. The application process for this scholarship is rigorous, however you will be assigned a personalized NNEI coordinator who will help you with all the paperwork based on your plan of study. We will even invoice the VA directly so you won’t have to deal with the payments. This scholarship is available for both RN to BSN and MSN online degree seeking students.
